Kobe’s Confidence in Current Olympic Team Can Beat ’92 Dream Team Sparks Debate
We have all heard Kobe’s comments that the current USA Olympic would beat the ’92 Dream team. Those comments were met with a large degree of disagreement. Michael Jordan responded saying “I absolutely laughed…But to me it’s not even a question.” Other members of that ’92 squad responded, including Charles Barkley and Larry Bird.
Dream Team Not An Overwhelming Favorite
Unlike everyone else I don’t see the Dream Team as an overwhelming favorite over this years Olympic team. The Dream Team possess overall better talent on their squad. But I think the biggest advantage the 2012 team have over the Dream Team is their cohesiveness as a team.
The core of this team has been together since the ’07 FIBA Americas Championship. For those who were not including on that team they were still apart of USA basketball on the Select team. So these players are very familiar with playing each other. On the other hand the ’92 Dream team we only together for a relative short time, only a few months.
Deciding Factor
The X-factor in deciding who would win in a matchup between these two teams, is Michael Jordan and the Dream Team’s frontline. The 2012 squad have no answers on defense for the likes of Jordan, Ewing, Robinson, and Malone. Yet I think that gives them a slim margin of victory over the 2012 team. What they lack in size they make up for it in quickness, athleticism, and experience as a team.
The Dream Team wins with no more than a single digit victory. I would even say that game would come down to the final minutes. To give a precise number, I’ll say Dream team by 8.
