Gotham Girls Give Us An Introduction to Roller Derby
Sports Cipher was recently invited to attend our first professional
roller derby. It was in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. We were
able to attend a double header featuring the Gotham Girls Roller Derby
(GGRD) Wall Street Traitors vs the Ithaca League of Women Rollers and
the GGRD All-Stars vs Steel City’s Hurtin’.
Introduction
It was the GGRD All Stars who gave us an amazing introduction to the
sport with their dominating performance. The GGRD All-Stars who are
the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) defending champions
did not relent their punishment of their performance in route to their
20th victory in a row.
It didn’t take us long to recognize how intense this sport is. The
bout was fast paced fulled with collisions. Players crashed into each
other and the floor on many occasions. The bout was captivating watching this women battle for position.
The derby was a great experience and we are looking for the next roller derby bout.
